The atheist stands before the vast door beyond which lies eternity. It is open a crack, but he refuses to push at it. The materialist stands before the opalescent door behind which the spirit moves. It is open a crack, but he shrugs and declines to look inside. “It’s probably nothing.”

Immaterialism, Quentin S. Crisp, from Neo-Decadence: 12 Manifestos, 2021

Immaterialism brings together artists whose work, through ritual, intuition, or process aim to use materials to evoke the immaterial realms of memory, spirituality or the ineffable. Rather than immaterialism relating to artwork that is ‘de-materialised’ or does not have a significant physical presence, this show brings together artists who use matter and materials to conjure immaterial ideas. The exhibition includes painting, work on paper, photography, film, sculpture, and performance exploring the relationship and resonances between disparate practices.
